Amazon has updated its Kindle e-reader lineup with new models, including the Kindle 12, Paperwhite 7, and Colorsoft 2, according to Zive.cz. Prices have increased, though European pricing details remain unspecified.
The Kindle 12 is 5 mm shorter and 18 grams lighter than its predecessor, with a 32GB storage option and aluminum back panel. The Paperwhite 7 maintains a 7-inch display but includes a more contrast-rich screen, water resistance, and a Signature variant with magnetic charging and a tappable cover. The Colorsoft 2 offers a faster, more contrast-rich display in both black-and-white and color modes, also available in a Signature edition. All models feature reduced dimensions, with thicknesses under 7 mm, and upgraded display technology to bring text closer to the eye.
Design Refinements and Display Upgrades
The Kindle 12, Paperwhite 7, and Colorsoft 2 each measure under 7 mm in thickness, with the Kindle 12 weighing 140 grams. The Paperwhite 7’s Signature model introduces magnetic charging via pogo pins, requiring a new dock, while the Colorsoft 2’s Signature variant includes aluminum backing and improved readability. All models retain e-ink displays with 300 ppi resolution, though the Colorsoft 2 adds a 150 ppi color mode. The Paperwhite 7’s Signature edition also features adjustable color temperature and automatic brightness.
Pricing Increases and Storage Options
American prices for the updated Kindles start at $110 for the base Kindle 12, rising to $320 for the Colorsoft 2 Signature model. All models saw price hikes of at least $40 compared to predecessors, with European pricing pending. Storage options include 16GB or 32GB across the lineup, while the Paperwhite 7 and Colorsoft 2 Signature variants offer water resistance (IPX8) and enhanced display features. The Kindle 12’s aluminum edition costs $190, and the Colorsoft 2’s Signature variant is priced at $320.
New Remote Controller and Accessories
A $35 Bluetooth-enabled remote controller, the Kindle Click, was released alongside the new devices. It allows hands-free navigation for users placing their e-reader on a stand or treadmill. The accessory is compatible with both new and older Kindle models. The Paperwhite 7 Signature variant includes a tappable cover with physical buttons for scrolling, offering an alternative to touchscreens.
Who will absorb the price increases remains unclear, as European pricing has not been disclosed. The extent of consumer demand for these incremental upgrades also remains unknown.
