Dutch Royal Couple Tackles Garden Refresh at NLdoet Event
Koning Willem-Alexander and Koningin Máxima spent their Friday volunteering at the Bornholm residential care center in Hoofddorp, participating in the annual NLdoet initiative. The royal couple joined residents and other volunteers to revitalize the center’s gardens.
Hands-On Gardening with a Playful Exchange
During the NLdoet event, the King and Queen actively participated in gardening tasks, including filling flower boxes and tending to the grounds. Willem-Alexander playfully teased Máxima, saying, “Just step aside, Your Majesty,” according to reports from AD.nl.
Braving the Weather for a Good Cause
Despite rainy conditions, the royal couple continued their work, demonstrating their commitment to the volunteer effort. Máxima was observed pruning trees, while Willem-Alexander focused on potting flowers as reported by Blauw Bloed. The King even joked about checking the weather radar, suggesting they could continue drinking coffee if the rain persisted.
A Moment of Reflection and a Near Miss
One resident, a 91-year-old woman named Mevrouw Sauer, expressed her joy at being able to share the experience with the King. Máxima also had a moment of excitement when she confidently stepped over a pond in the garden, successfully avoiding a fall according to Royalty Online.
NLdoet and the Oranje Fonds
NLdoet is an initiative of the Oranje Fonds, for which the King and Queen serve as patrons as noted by nu.nl. The annual event encourages volunteerism throughout the Netherlands.
Future Participation with the Princesses?
When asked about the possibility of their daughters, Princess Amalia, Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane, participating in future NLdoet activities, King Willem-Alexander described it as a “nice idea.”
