KL Rahul Appointed Captain and Opener for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026
New Delhi – KL Rahul is set to captain and open the batting for the Delhi Capitals in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The 33-year-old will also resume wicket-keeping duties for the franchise.
Strategic Shift in 2025 Led to Improved Performance
Rahul’s anticipated role at the top of the order follows a mid-season adjustment in 2025 that significantly boosted his form. Initially deployed in the middle order, the team management was compelled to promote him to opener due to inconsistent performances from Jake Fraser-McGurk.
Prior to the positional change, Rahul primarily batted at No. 4, a role assigned before the start of the previous season. Although, after 11 league matches, a tactical shift was implemented. This change yielded immediate results, highlighted by an unbeaten 112 off 65 balls against the Gujarat Titans, although the Capitals ultimately lost the match as the Titans chased down the target with ten wickets and an over to spare.
Rahul’s Impact in the Previous Season
Rahul was the leading run-scorer for the Delhi Capitals in the 2025 season, accumulating 539 runs in 13 games. His strike rate of 149.72 was his highest since the 2018 IPL edition.
Delhi Capitals’ Preparations for 2026
The Delhi Capitals have already commenced preparations for the upcoming season, conducting multiple preparatory camps in Delhi and Hyderabad. The coaching staff, led by head coach Hemang Badani and Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao, has transitioned its focus to the IPL after completing their commitments in The Hundred tournament. Further clarity on player roles is expected once captain Axar Patel joins the squad.
Strategic Acquisitions in the IPL Auction
The Delhi Capitals made several key acquisitions during the IPL auction, securing the services of David Miller and Ben Duckett at their base prices. They also bolstered their bowling attack with the addition of Auqib Nabi, Lungi Ngidi, and Kyle Jamieson.
Looking Ahead
Despite a strong start in the previous season, the Axar Patel-led Delhi Capitals lost momentum after a defeat to the Mumbai Indians at home. This setback derailed their campaign, leading to inconsistent performances and ultimately preventing them from reaching the playoffs. The Capitals finished fifth in the league standings.
With a strong Indian core, quality overseas players, and a potent spin attack featuring Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, the Delhi Capitals are considered a strong contender for the IPL title in 2026.
