KM Virgo Captain Named Suspect in Java Sea Sinking Case

Indonesian maritime police have arrested and detained Arief Yunianto, the captain of the sunken vessel KM Virgo Transport 8, following an investigation into the deadly Java Sea shipwreck. National Police authorities confirmed the arrest on September 30, 2026, as investigators examine broader operational liabilities in the disaster.

Captain Arrested and Detained in Java Sea Shipwreck Investigation

The captain of KM Virgo Transport 8, identified as Arief Yunianto, faces criminal charges related to the vessel’s sinking in the Java Sea. According to Kombes Kukuh Prabowo, Head of the Sub-Directorate of Law Enforcement for the Water Police Korpolairud Baharkam Polri, Yunianto was taken into custody immediately following his designation as a suspect. He is currently being held at the detention center of the South Kalimantan Regional Police.

“The case has been handed over to the Law Enforcement Directorate of the Water Police Korpolairud Baharkam Polri,” Prabowo told reporters on September 30, 2026. “Currently, we have handled it, and for the time being, we have named the captain as a suspect and he has been detained.”

National Police Take Over Multi-Agency Investigation

The high-profile maritime case was transferred to the National Police headquarters in Jakarta after initial handling by the South Kalimantan Regional Police. National Police Public Relations Division Head Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir stated that law enforcement has worked alongside search and rescue agencies since the vessel went down on September 13, 2026.

“From the beginning of the incident, the National Police, together with Basarnas, the TNI, and related stakeholders, have taken integrated mitigation and handling steps,” Isir said in a written statement on September 28, 2026. These operations spanned search and rescue missions, victim evacuations, family support, and the ongoing criminal investigation.

Before the case transfer, investigators from the South Kalimantan Water Police interviewed surviving crew members, maritime operators, and vessel leadership.

Ongoing Scrutiny Into Potential Additional Liable Parties

Investigators emphasize that the arrest of Captain Yunianto marks only the initial phase of criminal accountability. Prabowo noted that examination proceedings remain active to determine whether other individuals or corporate entities share responsibility for the maritime accident.

Authorities have not yet released the specific statutory articles applied against the captain, nor have they detailed the full construction of the criminal case. Prabowo indicated that a formal, comprehensive press release will follow the conclusion of the ongoing investigative phase.
