Kneecap Reflects on Grief and Loss in ‘Irish Goodbye’ Music Video

Irish hip-hop group Kneecap has released a poignant 12-minute short film accompanying their new single, “Irish Goodbye,” which explores themes of depression, loss, and suicide. The video, starring Liam Cunningham of “Game of Thrones” fame, delves into the personal experience of band member Móglaí Bap, grappling with the death of his mother, Aoife Ní Riain, in 2020. The song is featured on their upcoming album, FENIAN, set to release on May 1, 2026.

A Personal Story of Loss

Móglaí Bap wrote “Irish Goodbye” after discovering a documentary featuring his father, who served as president of Conradh na Gaeilge in the 1990s. The footage included a glimpse of his mother, which profoundly impacted him, as he hadn’t seen her captured on video before. He shared on Instagram that seeing her happiness in the footage was particularly moving, given her long struggle with depression and eventual death by suicide. “I never realised it was the day to day stuff I would miss when she was gone,” he wrote. “Going for a walk in the park, her giving out to me or keeping me in line, offering me pieces of advice. It’s all the small things that you miss.”

The ‘Irish Goodbye’ Short Film

Directed by Thomas James, the short film features Irish actors Deirdre O’Kane and Liam Cunningham, portraying a family navigating the aftermath of loss. The video intersperses scenes of Kneecap and Kae Tempest performing the song with dramatic depictions of grief, and remembrance. It concludes with a dedication to Aoife Ní Riain and a message of support: “For those we have lost and those we do not wish to lose.” The music for “Irish Goodbye” was written by Dan Carey, known for his collaborations with Fontaines D.C. And Black Midi.

Addressing Suicide and Mental Health
