Kompany Expresses Frustration with Refereeing Decisions After Bayern Draw with Leverkusen

Leverkusen – Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany voiced his dissatisfaction with the officiating following a 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen on March 14, 2026. The match saw Bayern receive two red cards and have goals disallowed, leading Kompany to question several decisions made by the referees.

Kompany Praises Team Mentality Despite Controversial Calls

Despite the contentious refereeing, Kompany expressed immense pride in his team’s performance and resilience. “I’m incredibly proud of the team’s mentality today,” Kompany stated, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Many things happened, there were phases where you could have different opinions, and which influenced the game.”

Disputed Red Cards and Goal Disallowances

Kompany specifically questioned the red card issued to Bayern’s Jackson, stating, “We got a red card [Jackson] out of nowhere. No discussion about that.” He also expressed confusion over the red card given to Lucho, saying, “However, there’s discussion about Lucho’s red card. I can’t understand it.”

The Bayern coach further contested the decision to disallow a goal scored by Harry Kane, stating, “Regarding Jonathan Tah’s goal, what should he do? The ball bounced off his arm into his foot, there was no movement. If you played football you know what I’m talking about. As for Harry’s goal, I can’t understand it either. For me it was a clear goal. I don’t know what he should do.”

Kane’s Potential Return and Team Fitness

Looking ahead, Kompany indicated that Harry Kane has a chance to return to the lineup for Bayern’s upcoming match. ESPN reported on March 13, 2026, that Kane has completed a full week of training following a calf complaint. Kompany stated, “There’s a chance he’ll play tomorrow. He’s had a full week of training.”

However, Bayern is dealing with injuries to Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies, and a recent injury to backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig has necessitated the use of 37-year-classic Sven Ulreich.

Kompany’s Overall Assessment

Despite the frustrations with the officiating, Kompany remains optimistic about his team’s progress. Goal.com reported Kompany saying that Kane’s participation depends on the player’s assessment of his own fitness: “If Harry gives the signal that he can play, then he will.”

Kompany believes the injuries sustained by Musiala, Davies, and Urbig are not long-term, but acknowledges the frustration of losing key players during a crucial period.
