Wrestling veteran Konnan is currently hospitalized in San Diego, California, following surgery to amputate one of his legs due to medical complications. The news has prompted an outpouring of support from colleagues and fans alike, recognizing Konnan’s significant contributions to professional wrestling in both the United States and Mexico.

Jarrett and Thompson Express Support

Jeff Jarrett and Conrad Thompson addressed the situation on their “My World” podcast, emphasizing Konnan’s lasting impact. Jarrett revealed he immediately reached out to Konnan upon hearing the news, offering support and receiving a characteristically humorous response in return. “I saw that headline come across, I immediately texted him. I didn’t ask any details. Just said, ‘Hey dude, love you. Hope all is well,’” Jarrett said. “We texted back and forth. He said some funnies, like he always does & we went on about our way.”

A Pioneer for Lucha Libre in the US

Thompson highlighted Konnan’s pivotal role in bringing luchadores to prominence in the American wrestling scene. While acknowledging Paul Heyman’s early work with luchadores in ECW, Thompson asserted that Konnan was instrumental in introducing them to a wider audience. “A lot of people would say the straw that stirs the drink is the luchadores,” Thompson stated. “How did they get into ECW? How were they on Paul’s radar? And the answer is, they had an advocate named Konnan.”

Thompson specifically cited Rey Mysterio, Juventud Guerrera, Psicosis, and La Parka as wrestlers whose success in the US was directly linked to Konnan’s advocacy. Rey Mysterio even chose Konnan to induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame, a testament to their long-standing relationship and Konnan’s influence.

Jarrett further emphasized Konnan’s importance, particularly during the height of WCW’s Nitro era. He believes the lucha libre element, largely championed by Konnan, was crucial to Nitro’s success. “If you take out the Lucha Libre aspect of Nitro, I just don’t suppose you have — yes, you have NWO… but I just think he was a massive part of the success of Nitro,” Jarrett explained. He also stated that Rey Mysterio’s global icon status wouldn’t have been possible without the platform provided by WCW.

Konnan’s influence extended to TNA (now Impact Wrestling), where Jarrett acknowledged his vision for incorporating lucha libre into the X Division. “The day before I launched TNA, I knew that the X Division needed to have a big part of Lucha in there,” Jarrett said.
