South Korea Advances Global AI Hub with UN Agency Cooperation

South Korea is moving forward with plans to establish a global artificial intelligence (AI) hub, securing cooperation from six United Nations agencies. The initiative aims to leverage AI technologies to address pressing global challenges, with a focus on assisting developing countries and vulnerable populations.

Key Partnerships Secured

On March 18, 2026, South Korea signed a letter of intent with the following UN agencies:

• International Labor Organization (ILO)
• International Organization for Migration (IOM)
• International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
• World Health Organization (WHO)
• World Food Program (WFP)
• United Nations Development Program (UNDP)

The signing ceremony took place in Geneva, Switzerland, with representatives from the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT and each UN agency participating. The Korea Times and The Korea JoongAng Daily reported on the agreement.

Prime Minister Kim’s Role in Securing Cooperation

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok played a pivotal role in securing this international collaboration. He undertook a two-nation tour of the United States and Switzerland, holding meetings with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the heads of the six participating UN agencies. The Chosun Ilbo noted that Prime Minister Kim formed a consensus to participate in global artificial intelligence (AI) cooperation with the six UN agencies.

During these meetings, Prime Minister Kim emphasized South Korea’s commitment to utilizing AI for global good, specifically to support developing nations and vulnerable groups. Agency leaders expressed their support for the initiative and pledged to collaborate closely on the hub’s development. Anadolu Agency reported that the three agency chiefs agreed to maintain communication on the details of the planned hub.

The AI Hub’s Objectives

The South Korean government envisions the AI hub as a collaborative platform bringing together UN bodies, South Korea’s public sector, and private companies. The hub will focus on developing AI-based solutions to address critical global issues. The initiative aims to foster innovation and ensure that the benefits of AI are shared equitably worldwide.
