Kotak Mahindra Bank Pioneers Digital FPI Onboarding in India

Kotak Mahindra Bank has achieved a significant milestone in streamlining foreign investment into India, becoming the first custodian in the nation to issue foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) licenses and complete the entire account opening process utilizing electronic signatures. This progress marks a crucial step towards fully digital onboarding for overseas investors, enhancing efficiency and accessibility within the Indian financial market.

The bank has successfully issued two FPI licenses based exclusively on digitally signed documentation, according to a recent press release. This breakthrough follows the operationalization of a unified digital workflow by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in January 2026, paving the way for a more streamlined and secure investment process.

Traditionally, the FPI account opening process involved ample paperwork and physical documentation, creating logistical hurdles for international investors. By leveraging digital signatures and SEBI’s new digital workflow, Kotak Mahindra Bank has considerably reduced processing times and associated costs.this innovation is expected to attract increased foreign investment by simplifying the entry process for overseas entities.

“This is a significant step forward in our commitment to providing a seamless and efficient experience for our clients,” stated a representative from Kotak Mahindra Bank. “The adoption of digital signatures not only accelerates the onboarding process but also reinforces our commitment to security and compliance.”

The move is anticipated to encourage wider adoption of digital processes within the Indian financial sector, fostering greater transparency and ease of doing business. Industry analysts predict that this initiative will contribute to a more robust and competitive investment landscape in India, attracting a broader range of foreign portfolio investments.
