KPop Demon Hunters Sequel Confirmed for 2029

After generating a global phenomenon and garnering two Oscar nominations, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have officially confirmed a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters. The announcement follows the film’s success, becoming the most-watched movie in Netflix history upon its June 2025 release.

Creative Team Returns

Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will reprise their roles as directors and screenwriters for the sequel. This project also marks the beginning of an exclusive multi-year agreement between the filmmakers and Netflix for the development and direction of animated productions. Netflix announced the continuation of the story on March 12, 2026.

Kang’s Vision for the Future

Maggie Kang expressed her pride in the public’s enthusiasm for the story and its Korean characters, stating, “As a Korean filmmaker, I perceive immensely proud that the public wants more of this story and our Korean characters. There is so much more to this world we’ve created, and I’m excited to show it to you.” She added, “This is just the beginning.”

Expanding the World and Characters

Appelhans explained that the creative team aims to further develop the characters and their world, saying, “These characters are like family to us; His world has become our second home. We are excited to write your next chapter, challenge them and see them evolve, and continue to push the boundaries of how music, animation and story can be integrated.”

Release Date and Production

Although Netflix has not announced a specific release date, Variety reports the sequel is scheduled to premiere in 2029. The film will be the first project stemming from the new creative agreement, indicating that story development is already underway.

Sony Pictures Animation presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville stated their excitement to continue creative development with Kang and Appelhans. Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, highlighted the film’s global impact, noting that Kang and Appelhans “not only reached audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres.”
