KPop Demon Hunters Sequel Officially in Development at Netflix

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have confirmed a sequel to the hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters, solidifying the success of the original and signaling a continued partnership between the two studios.

A Global Phenomenon

Released in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters quickly became Netflix’s most-watched movie in history, surpassing 500 million views . The film, produced in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, centers around the fictional K-pop group Huntrix, whose music secretly prevents demons from invading the world. The film features the voices of Arden Cho, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Ahn Hyo-seop, Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, Liza Koshy, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong and Byung Hun Lee.

Musical Success and Awards Recognition

The film’s soundtrack has also achieved significant success, with the group HUNTR/X becoming the first K-pop girl group to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The song “Golden” made history as the first K-pop song to win a Grammy Award . As of March 2026, KPop Demon Hunters has received five Grammy nominations and two Oscar nominations – for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Golden”) .

Creative Team Returns

Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who helmed the original film, are set to return for the sequel as part of a new, multi-year writing and directing pact with Netflix . Kang expressed her pride as a Korean filmmaker, stating, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning” . Appelhans added, “These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together” .

Production Timeline

Whereas a 2029 release date was previously reported, Sony Animation has indicated that the production timeline for an animated project of this scale may result in a longer wait . Kang and Appelhans will focus on the sequel after awards season concludes .
