Ksenia Kanda on Crafting Complex Costumes and the Reality of Modern Cosplay

Ksenia Kanda spends her days working as an internet marketer, but her life outside the office revolves around intricate costume design. At 33 years old, she has spent over a decade building detailed outfits based on anime, gaming, and tabletop properties. In an interview with Gorsite.ru, Kanda detailed the financial costs, the extensive tools required, and the physical toll of bringing fictional characters to life.

From Fan to Subculture Creator

Kanda first discovered the cosplay community in 2011 at a subculture festival. Already an active fan of anime, seeing her favorite characters in person prompted her to join the subculture and try making costumes herself. Her first completed project featured Kanda Yu from the anime series D.Gray-Man, a character she still loves today. That initial build relied heavily on hand-sewing, a faux-leather coat, a mail-ordered wig, and a katana sourced from a souvenir shop. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a lifestyle that consumes almost all of her free time.

Tools and Materials Behind Detailed Builds

Building a professional-grade costume requires a workshop filled with specialized equipment. Kanda sews simple elements by hand or machine, but she turns to modern technology for heavy armor and props. A typical crafting setup includes a 3D printer, an engraving tool, a heat gun, plastic and wood cutting tools, and various paints. For styling wigs, she utilizes a mannequin head on a stand, hairspray, a flat iron, a crimping iron, and a set of professional shears.

Her recent complex projects include Sister Repentia from the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop gaming universe. That build required designing a custom outfit from scratch, creating print layouts for prayer scrolls, and burning fabric to achieve an aged texture. Body shaping also plays a role, with creators using padding, corsets, and structured fits to match a character’s proportions.

Financial Investment and Physical Discomfort

The cost of a costume scales with its complexity. A basic store-bought outfit with minimal accessories starts around 10,000 rubles, while advanced builds featuring custom armor, professional wig styling, and props can reach tens or hundreds of thousands of rubles. Photoshoots add to the expense, often requiring rented studios with specialized backdrops or 3D environments.

Wearing the finished product presents its own challenges. Kanda notes that every costume involves heat and discomfort. Bulky or rigid designs can make sitting down or drinking water nearly impossible, turning a convention appearance into an endurance test. While public reactions at street photoshoots are generally positive and curious, online platforms frequently expose creators to negativity, which Kanda handles by ignoring hostile comments.

Upcoming Projects and Future Builds

Kanda plans to tackle Mipha from The Legend of Zelda series for her next major undertaking. Because the character is anthropomorphic—half-human and half-animal—the build will require complex structural engineering and specialized makeup to achieve the correct proportions. Beyond personal projects, the regional scene continues to draw creators working across historical and pop-culture disciplines, including local artisans who recreate 19th-century ball gowns.
