KT Wiz Welcomes 2027 Draft Class Led by Local Pitcher Lee Seung-won

KT Wiz introduced its 2027 draft class on Sept. 4 at Suwon KT Wiz Park before a game against the Lotte Giants, featuring first-round left-handed pitcher Lee Seung-won, mydaily reported. The team invited all 11 drafted rookies to the stadium to meet the major league coaching staff and interact with fans.

Lee, a local product who attended Yulgok Middle School and Yushin High School, was selected fifth overall by KT Wiz. During his sophomore season, he posted a 3.21 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 27.2 innings across 10 appearances before undergoing Tommy John surgery in June of that year. The procedure limited him to just 5.2 innings across six appearances in 2026.

Lee Follows Brother's Advice on Professional Baseball

Lee began playing baseball under the influence of his older brother. Reflecting on the transition to professional ball, Lee shared advice he received from his sibling.

“My brother said I’d have to struggle more from now on,” Lee told reporters. “He told me that my parents wouldn’t be pushing me from behind anymore, that I had to do it alone, be careful with every action, and take responsibility for what I do.”

When asked about his role models within the organization, Lee pointed to starting pitcher So Hyung-jun, a fellow alumnus of Yushin High School. Lee described So as the embodiment of a reliable, steady starting pitcher who maintains composure under pressure.

Born on Baseball Day

Born on August 23, 2008—the exact date South Korea won the gold medal in baseball at the Beijing Olympic Games—Lee noted a personal connection to the sport’s calendar date in the country.

“I didn’t think about it at all until I came to high school and found out,” Lee said. “I looked it up on a whim, and that was the exact day they won the gold medal. So I think of myself as the son of baseball.”

Lee Aims to Build Healthy Body After Surgery

The rookie left-hander addressed questions surrounding his physical recovery from elbow surgery. Throughout his final high school season, inquiries regarding his pitching arm remained a constant source of stress.

“People around me kept asking if my arm was okay,” Lee said. “It was motivating, but at the same time, it was stressful. Once I come to the pros, even if it’s not immediately, I want to build a healthy body by the latter half of next year and do my best.”
