‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Season 2: What to Expect from the MonsterVerse Series
Apple TV+’s sci-fi series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has returned for a second season, promising to delve deeper into the mysteries of the MonsterVerse. Stars Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell, who both portray Army officer Lee Shaw across different timelines, recently discussed what fans can anticipate in the new installment.
Season 2: A “Moving Train”
Kurt and Wyatt Russell described Season 2 as a more fast-paced and linear continuation of the story established in Season 1. Wyatt Russell explained, “Season 2 is more like a moving train. You’re on it, and you’re going, and it’s more linear in certain ways. Season 1 was like you’re finding your footing… and that always presents an element of newness.” He added that knowing the characters and their dynamics allows the story to “blossom” in the new season.
Kurt Russell elaborated, stating that Season 2 begins to answer questions posed in the first season. “The first year was Alice goes down the rabbit hole, and we deal with it… Season 2 is really, Grandma comes out, and what she found down the rabbit hole comes out. Now they’re dealing with something that also came out with Grandma.”
Wyatt Russell’s ‘Monarch’ Spinoff: A “Punk Rock” Cold War Thriller
A spinoff series focusing on Wyatt Russell’s portrayal of Lee Shaw is currently in development. Russell teased that the series will be unexpected, exploring Lee Shaw’s experiences after being “put on ice” in 1982 and the mission he undertakes afterward. He described the series as a fusion of Titans and Cold War elements, calling it “punk rock.”
“It’s so well integrated into both of those things, the way that they’ve dealt with and are dealing with their hand on how they infused monsters and infused the world of the MonsterVerse into a very, very, very human story, a la Monarch,” Russell said. Joby Harold is serving as showrunner and writer for the spinoff.
Kurt Russell and Lewis Pullman’s Super Bowl Commercial
The conversation also touched on Kurt Russell’s recent Super Bowl commercial with Lewis Pullman, a co-star of Wyatt Russell in Thunderbolts*. Wyatt Russell jokingly expressed his surprise, saying, “What the f*ck?” but ultimately shared his excitement for his father’s experience. Kurt Russell recounted that Pullman sought his advice for the commercial, and he suggested Pullman work with Lewis.
The pair playfully suggested a future commercial featuring both father-son duos, pitching the idea to Anheuser-Busch.
