Explosions Reported in Kyiv, Air Defenses Activated
On the evening of March 2, 2026, explosions were reported in Kyiv, Ukraine, prompting the activation of air defense systems, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The Air Force of Ukraine reported activity of a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) heading towards Kyiv. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine oversees operational management of the armed forces under the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
Vitali Klitschko, the Mayor of Kyiv, subsequently announced that air defenses were engaged in the capital and urged residents to seek shelter. Klitschko later confirmed that the air raid warning had been lifted in Kyiv.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is the central military command and control body responsible for planning national defense and strategic planning for the use of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Chief of the General Staff is currently Andrii Hnatov, whereas Oleksandr Syrskyi serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. This separation of roles occurred on March 28, 2020.
