The diagnosis, delivered in July 2025, revealed a dire situation: initial CT scans identified more than 15 tumors within his liver.
A Stage 4 Diagnosis and a Race Against Time
After an initial assessment by doctors in Des Moines, the Hess family sought specialized care at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. There, a rigorous combination of medical treatment and nutritional adjustments successfully reduced the tumor burden, opening a window of eligibility for a transplant.
The Necessity of a Living Donor
The medical team faced a significant hurdle: Hess’s brother was ruled out as a donor due to his liver anatomy. With the transplant team confirming that a living donor was needed, the family looked for a match. The procedure hinges on the human liver’s unique capacity for regeneration—a single lobe can be transplanted, with the remaining portion in the donor growing back to full size.
A Stranger’s Unexpected Intervention
Help arrived from an unlikely source. Abby Conley, a fellow Polk City resident who did not personally know the Hess family, began the donation process after following Kyler’s health updates online. She underwent three days of testing at the Mayo Clinic to confirm her compatibility.
Conley’s motivation was deeply personal. Her father died in 2021 while awaiting a bone marrow transplant for leukemia. In a letter written before his passing, he described his life as a “fairy tale” and urged his family to carry that legacy forward. By donating to Hess, Conley chose to act on that final encouragement.
