Pop star Kylie Minogue is leading a three-way race for this year’s Christmas number one, says teh Official Charts Company.
Her festive single XMAS is currently 7,000 units ahead of the nearest competitor, Wham’s Last Christmas – which has topped the charts for the last two years.
In third place, and only 231 sales behind Wham, is the charity single Lullaby, by Together For palestine – a supergroup featuring Bastille’s Dan Smith, Clean Bandit’s Grace chatto and James Bay.
Wham’s Last Christmas Could Make Chart History

Wham’s “last Christmas” is currently the number one single in the UK, and its extraordinary streaming numbers suggest it could remain at the top. If it does,the song will make history as the first ever to reach Christmas number one three times.
Originally released in 1984,”Last Christmas” was famously kept off the top spot that year by Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas.” It finally achieved number one status in 2021.
the UK’s best-selling song of the weekend was “Together For Palestine,” a charity single raising funds for aid for people in Gaza. It’s based on the traditional Palestinian folk song “Ya Biladi.”
“Fairytale of New York” in Contention for UK Christmas Number One 2023
The classic holiday song “Fairytale of New york” by The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl is currently in strong contention for the UK Christmas Number One spot in 2023, possibly achieving a feat it has never reached in its history. The song is currently predicted to be at number five, but a surge in streaming and sales, boosted by a limited-edition zoetrope vinyl release, could see it climb the charts. The top five songs are incredibly close, with less than 10,000 “sales” separating them, according to the Official Charts Company.
Close Race for the Top Spot
The race for the Christmas number One is particularly tight this year. Mariah carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You” is currently predicted to reach number four. However, the Official Charts Company notes that the data is preliminary and subject to change as more streaming figures are tallied throughout the week.
Zoetrope Vinyl Boosts Sales
“Fairytale of New York” has seen a notable boost in sales thanks to the release of a limited-edition zoetrope vinyl on Friday, December 15th. A zoetrope is a 19th-century optical toy that creates the illusion of motion when spun. This special edition has contributed to the song becoming the third best-selling single of the week.
A Long-Awaited Number One?
Despite its enduring popularity and status as a Christmas staple, “Fairytale of New York” has never reached the number one position on the UK charts. It has achieved every other position within the Top 20.Strong streaming numbers, combined with the vinyl sales, offer a real prospect for the song to finally claim the top spot this year.
