The panel of House Democrats also included Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Los Angeles), who represents the district encompassing the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Kamlager-Dove noted that she and more than three dozen elected officials previously wrote to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to demand stronger federal support, pointing to upcoming World Cup soccer matches in Los Angeles as a test of the region’s capacity to host world-class events.

White House and LA28 Responses

A White House official disputed claims that the administration is falling short, telling reporters that the White House has proactively met with local officials, members of Congress, and the organizing committee at high levels. The official described discussions as early stage but emphasized that the administration is actively working to secure necessary resources.

Meanwhile, LA28, the private nonprofit organization overseeing the Games, has pursued a cooperative strategy with Washington Republicans. Marisa McGrath Liston, top spokesperson for LA28, stated that the president and the administration have been supportive throughout the process, noting that the group looks forward to welcoming athletes and visitors.

Financial Transparency Demands From L.A. City Controller

City Controller Kenneth Mejia demanded that LA28 provide detailed financial reports. According to Mejia’s office, LA28 has fully complied with only two of nine requirements outlined in the Games Agreement, a contract governing the city’s financial backstop role.

Missing documentation cited by Mejia includes ticket sales and sponsorship revenue comparisons against projections, bank statements, venue budgets, and the identities and contract values of vendors. Mejia stated that while everyone wants a successful Olympiad, accountability to local taxpayers must remain a priority. LA28 officials declined to comment on the controller’s statement.

Federal Security Allocations and Next Steps

Although an omnibus spending bill approved last year designated $1 billion in security funding for the 2028 Games, none of those funds have reached Los Angeles yet. Local representatives warn that without timely federal allocations, the region will struggle to deliver the showcase event expected by the country.
