Los Angeles Mayor Demands Apology From Donald Trump Over Iran Remarks

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass demanded a public apology from Donald Trump after the president suggested during a Nebraska campaign rally that Iran could destroy her city or neighboring San Diego.

Bass criticized the remarks during an interview with MS NOW, stating that a president’s primary duty is to protect the American people rather than invite a foreign power to attack domestic cities. The controversy centers on campaign comments where Trump addressed the conflict with Iran and fuel prices, suggesting that letting Iran target Los Angeles or San Diego could be a low price to pay to end hostilities quickly.

The mayor emphasized the severe local impact of such rhetoric, particularly in San Diego, which houses more than 120,000 active-duty military personnel and a broader armed forces community of approximately half a million people.

California Leaders Demand Apology for Dangerous Rhetoric

The 43-member California Democratic congressional delegation issued a formal statement demanding an apology for the more than 16 million residents living in the Los Angeles and San Diego metropolitan areas. Led by Representative Zoe Lofgren, the lawmakers argued that the remarks contradicted the presidential oath to defend the nation against enemies.

California Governor Gavin Newsom also denounced the statements, calling them dangerous and disturbed while questioning why Republican leaders, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance had not offered condemnations.

White House communications director Steven Cheung defended the remarks on social media, asserting that media criticisms lacked reality and that Trump was merely highlighting the nuclear threat Iran would have represented for American cities if he had not stopped its nuclear program. Mayor Bass rejected that explanation, noting it bore no relation to the actual words spoken by the president.
