Luka Dončić Faces Suspension as Lakers Prepare for Pistons Clash

The Los Angeles Lakers may be without star forward Luka Dončić for their Monday matchup against the Detroit Pistons. Dončić is facing a one-game suspension after receiving his 16th technical foul of the season during Saturday’s 105-104 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Technical Foul and Potential Suspension

The technical foul was assessed late in the third quarter following an exchange of words between Dončić and Orlando Magic center Goga Bitadze. Both players received technical fouls, but the penalty is more significant for Dončić, who has now reached the NBA’s threshold for an automatic one-game suspension. Unless the NBA rescinds the foul, he will be ineligible to play against the Pistons.

Lakers Appeal and Details of the Incident

Lakers head coach JJ Redick indicated the team plans to appeal the technical foul. According to Redick, the incident was triggered by Bitadze making a comment about Dončić’s mother, reportedly saying he would “f*** [Dončić’s] whole family.” ClutchPoints reports the Lakers have already filed the appeal with the league.

Dončić’s History of Technical Fouls

This isn’t the first time Dončić has flirted with a suspension due to technical fouls. He finished three consecutive seasons (2020-2023) with 15 technicals and had 13 last season. In 2023, he was initially assessed a 16th technical foul, but the NBA ultimately rescinded it. The league also rescinded one technical foul from Dončić earlier this season, deeming it a case of mistaken officiating. Silver Screen and Roll highlights this pattern of accumulating technical fouls.

Impact on Lakers and Pistons Matchup

Dončić’s potential absence is significant as the Lakers (9-1) face the East-leading Detroit Pistons. The Pistons have already clinched a berth in the NBA playoffs for the second consecutive season. Sporting News notes the game is scheduled for Monday, March 23, at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET at Little Caesars Arena.

Dončić’s Recent Performance and Further Penalties

Despite the technical foul, Dončić had a strong performance against the Magic, scoring 33 points with 8 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. If the suspension is upheld, Dončić will also face a $5,000 fine for each subsequent technical foul and an additional one-game suspension for every two technicals received for the remainder of the regular season.
