Latvia Declares Airspace Threat Warning for Kraslavas and Rezeknes Municipalities

The National Armed Forces issued a warning covering Kraslavas and Rezeknes municipalities regarding a potential threat to Latvian airspace, eng.lsm.lv reported. A cell broadcasting alert was transmitted directly to residents across both municipalities to signal the heightened risk level.

National Armed Forces Deploy Alert System and Fighter Jets

The National Armed Forces operate a two-tier cell broadcast alert system to inform the public of dangers overhead. A yellow alert functions as an informational message that does not require immediate public action, though it urges individuals to remain aware of potential threats. An orange alert indicates a confirmed airspace threat that demands immediate action from residents according to specific safety instructions. In connection with the Kraslave Municipality declaration, fighter jets assigned to NATO’s Baltic air policing mission were activated.

Safety Instructions for Affected Residents

People located within the threatened area who are indoors must take cover in rooms featuring at least two walls separating them from the outside of the building. Individuals inside vehicles must assess the situation, continue driving to a safe location, or exit immediately to move away from the road and seek the nearest shelter. Anyone hearing an explosion must stay indoors away from windows and doors, and wait at least 10 minutes after the final blast before leaving unless emergency services issue earlier instructions. Residents should only head to designated basements or bomb shelters if the early warning system explicitly directs them to do so. Authorities also instruct the public to avoid sharing photos or videos on social media to prevent the spread of misinformation and the exposure of defensive positions.

Background on Foreign Unmanned Aircraft Risks

The National Armed Forces have previously stated that foreign unmanned aircraft may enter or approach Latvian airspace while Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues. Residents outside the affected zone must follow instructions from relevant authorities and contact family or friends in the danger area to verify their safety.

When is it safe to leave a building after hearing an explosion?

Residents must remain inside until they receive notification from emergency services or wait at least 10 minutes after the last explosion.

Why are residents told not to post photos on social media during a threat?

Posting photos or videos on social media can spread misinformation and reveal defensive military positions to external actors.
