Parisian Bohemia Premieres at Northern Lights Culture Palace
Latvia’s first eco-fashion operetta debuted on October 1 at the Ziemeļblāzma Culture Palace, transforming Imre Kálmán’s classic work The Violet of Montmartre into a contemporary jazz production. Titled Parisian bohemia, the new staging by the Operetta Theater reimagines 19th-century Parisian artists with aesthetics drawn from the insect world.
While director Sonora Vaice centered the production on three young artists struggling with debts and poverty in Montmartre, the staging weaves human behavior with a mysterious insect kingdom. Conductor Atvars Lakstīgala and his orchestra performed Kálmán’s score in jazz arrangements while dressed as insects. Lakstīgala admitted initial skepticism toward abandoning a traditional symphonic orchestra, but later embraced the fresh musical direction.
Actors Portray Characters in Insect Motifs
The production features Anta Jankovska, Jolanta Strikaite, Dainis Skutelis, and Nauris Indzeris in roles. Juris Jope stars as the bailiff François Picaĉek. Jope noted that his character balances friendliness with the practical reality that bills must be paid, viewing the artists’ world through a pragmatic lens.
Unlike traditional stagings, the production uses high-fashion insect motifs to mirror character traits. Painter Raoul, poet Henri, and composer Florimond deal with love triangles and financial ruin against a backdrop of elaborate, nature-inspired costumes. Former Operetta Theater employee Jānis Briedis observed that while the traditional bohemian atmosphere shifted significantly, the insect concept provided a striking visual solution.
Guests and Former President Praise Operetta Revival
Opening night drew diverse audiences, including former President Valdis Zatlers and Lilita Zatlere. Lilita Zatlere expressed pleasant surprise at the production, while Valdis Zatlers noted the scarcity of operetta in Latvia for many years and thanked the creators for reviving the genre. Longtime theatergoers, including Vija Rožukalne, compared the modern adaptation favorably to childhood memories of the original work, noting its appeal to younger generations.
