Laughing Gas Shows Promise for Severe Depression
Nitrous oxide – more commonly known as laughing gas – could offer relief for people struggling with severe depression, a new review of clinical evidence suggests. It’s a potential breakthrough for those who haven’t found help with conventional treatments.
The review, published in the journal eBioMedicine, looked at previous studies on how medically administered nitrous oxide affects adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment-resistant depression (TRD). researchers wanted too see if this readily available gas could be a new option for those who are suffering.
Treatment-resistant depression is a significant problem. In the UK, it affects almost half of patients, meaning they don’t get better even after trying at least two different antidepressants. Finding new solutions is critical.
Researchers from the universities of Birmingham and Oxford, along with Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation trust, analyzed data from seven clinical trials.these trials tested nitrous oxide – already used for pain relief – on patients with MDD, TRD, and even bipolar depression.
What they found was encouraging. A single,short inhalation session with 50% nitrous oxide lead to quick and noticeable improvements in depressive symptoms within 24 hours. However, it’s significant to note that these benefits didn’t last long, fading within a week.
Repeated treatments over several weeks showed more lasting results. This suggests that ongoing doses might be necessary to keep the improvements going. It’s not a one-time fix,but potentially a longer-term treatment option.
Scientists believe nitrous oxide works by affecting glutamate receptors in the brain. These receptors are vital for interaction between brain cells, especially in areas that control mood and emotions. By influencing these receptors, nitrous oxide could help reset brain activity.
“This study brings together the best possible evidence indicating that nitrous oxide has the potential to be a new treatment for depression,” says Kiranpreet Gill, a PhD researcher at the University of Birmingham and the study’s first author. “However, more research is needed to determine the optimal dosage and treatment schedule.”
While the findings are promising, experts caution that nitrous oxide isn’t a cure-all.It’s likely to be most effective when used as part of a broader treatment plan, including therapy and other medications. Further research will help determine exactly how this gas can best be used to help those battling depression.
