The Death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, was killed on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in airstrikes by Israel that destroyed his central Tehran compound. He was 86 years old. The operation, conducted with U.S. Support, targeted Khamenei after decades of unsuccessful diplomatic efforts to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear program. He had held power since 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini as the second supreme leader of the Islamic Republic.

Intelligence Gathering and the Operation

The operation to eliminate Khamenei was the result of months of meticulous intelligence gathering. Israeli intelligence, aided by information from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), pinpointed a meeting of top Iranian officials at a leadership compound in Tehran. Within a minute, coordinated strikes resulted in the deaths of Khamenei, approximately a dozen family members, and seven members of Iran’s top security leadership.
