Lee Zii Jia Returns to Training, Boosting Malaysia’s Thomas Cup Hopes Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia has taken a significant step forward in his recovery by returning to training at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM), easing concerns about his availability for the upcoming Thomas Cup. After missing several training sessions earlier this month due to an ankle injury, Zii Jia’s absence had raised questions among fans and officials regarding his readiness for the prestigious team event. Though, his return to full training has now provided a timely boost for the national squad. Positive Signs From Training Sessions Zii Jia was spotted participating in recent training sessions, including match play, indicating that his recovery is progressing well. Observers noted that he moved comfortably on court, showing no visible signs of discomfort despite the recent injury setback. His return has been particularly encouraging for Malaysia’s coaching team, who are closely monitoring his condition ahead of the Thomas Cup. According to reports, Zii Jia has been training under the guidance of Liew Daren while also being monitored by national coaches, including K Yogendran, ensuring a structured and careful return to competitive form. Lee Chong Wei Relieved by Progress Malaysia’s badminton legend and BAM Performance Committee chairman Lee Chong Wei expressed optimism following Zii Jia’s return, describing it as a positive development for the national team. He acknowledged that while badminton performance cannot be judged from a single session, Zii Jia’s current level remains strong compared to other singles players in the squad. “He is still one of our key players, especially as a third singles option. The feedback from the coaching team has been positive so far,” Chong Wei shared. Zii Jia Commits to Thomas Cup Squad It is with great pleasure to announce that Lee Zii Jia has reached an agreement with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to be part of the Thomas Cup squad. The 27-year-old has agreed to help Malaysia in the Thomas Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24-May 3 without making any demands from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). Many had expected the Paris Olympic Games bronze medallist to seek compensation in the form of image rights fees, as he is now a professional player. However, in a demonstrate of commitment to ending the nation’s 34-year wait for the Thomas Cup title, Zii Jia has agreed to set those matters aside. Zii Jia has also agreed to waive his image rights fee in order to represent the country at the upcoming Thomas Cup, reflecting his commitment and dedication to Malaysia. Team LZJ said in a statement yesterday: “We hope this marks a modern dawn for Zii Jia and BAM, moving forward together in the best interest of Malaysian badminton.” Zii Jia also expressed his appreciation to the BAM leadership – president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and performance committee Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei for placing their trust in him to assist Malaysia’s Thomas Cup mission. Meanwhile, the National Sports Institute (NSI) chief executive officer Dr P. Vellapandian stated that no charges would be imposed on Zii Jia should he wish to seek treatment with them. Vellapandian explained that even though Zii Jia is not under the BAM, the NSI were prepared to provide complimentary services as he would still be representing the country. As Malaysia prepares for the Thomas Cup Finals, the return of Lee Zii Jia to full training and his willingness to prioritize national duty over personal terms have significantly strengthened the team’s prospects. His experience, skill, and leadership will be crucial assets in Malaysia’s bid to conclude its long-standing drought in the men’s team event.
