Lena Dunham Brings Girls Back to HBO for a 2027 Limited Run
Lena Dunham’s seminal HBO comedy series Girls will return for a five-episode special event on HBO, with production slated to begin in 2027, nearly a decade after the show wrapped its sixth season, The Irish Times reported. The original series, which premiered in 2012, followed four millennial friends navigating their twenties in New York City and launched the careers of creator Dunham, Allison Williams, Adam Driver, and Zosia Mamet.
The Original Cast Reunites in a Teaser Video
HBO announced the revival on Tuesday by releasing a video featuring the original core cast members connecting on a video call. Creator and star Lena Dunham, who plays Hannah Horvath, will be joined by Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro, and Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson. Andrew Rannells will also reprise his role as Elijah Krantz. During the video call, Dunham asked her co-stars if they were free next summer to make the show again, to which Rannells chimed in: I’m in, but only because you trash cans need constant supervision.
Dunham closed the call by joking, Seriously, can we still call it Girls? Cause we’re like old as f–.

A Shift in Perspective from Twenties to Forties
While the original six-season run captured the tumult and dysfunction of early adulthood, the upcoming revival shifts its gaze to a new milestone. Amy Gravitt, the head of HBO comedy programming, noted in a statement reported by The Guardian that the world has changed massively since audiences last saw the characters, adding that fans will see how they have grown. Dunham explained in her own statement that the characters began talking to her around her 40th birthday, providing a specific story she was burning to tell with the gift of hindsight and gratitude. Judd Apatow is also returning to the project as an executive producer.

Unanswered Questions Surrounding the Revival
As production remains years away, several key details about the five-episode addendum remain unconfirmed. Other details, including the official title, specific plot points, and any further additions to the cast, have not yet been announced by HBO.
