Sam Prendergast’s Resilience: Cullen Backs Ireland’s Out-Half to Overcome Setback
Leinster head coach Leo Cullen has expressed confidence in Sam Prendergast’s ability to rebound from a challenging period following his omission from the Ireland squad for recent Six Nations matches. The 22-year-old out-half was dropped after performances against France and Italy, with Jack Crowley subsequently establishing himself as the first-choice option for Ireland.
A Bumpy Road for the Young Fly-Half
Prendergast relinquished the starting number 10 jersey for Ireland and was absent from the match-day squad for their record-breaking victory against England at Twickenham. Despite this setback, Cullen believes the experience will ultimately benefit the young player. “Personally, I think he’ll be fine,” Cullen told RTÉ Sport. “But yeah, it’s the rocky road, isn’t it? You’ve got to just deal with some of the bumps along the way.”
Learning from Challenges
Cullen emphasized the importance of overcoming adversity in a player’s development. “It’s great thing to go through, isn’t it? Because it’s never smooth sailing, I think. The sooner we all understand that, sometimes the easier it can be.” He noted that young players often progress without significant obstacles when playing in strong teams, but facing challenges is crucial for growth. “Sometimes the sooner you hit some of these speed bumps, the better.”
Focus on Enjoyment and Performance
The Leinster coach stressed the importance of rediscovering the joy of playing. “Just getting back out there and enjoying it. At the conclude of the day, I know there’s so much analysis of the game, because it means there’s a lot of interest in the game. But you’re out there trying to just enjoy yourself playing a game that you love. So, bring the joy to the performance.” Cullen highlighted the impact of Ireland’s recent performance, suggesting it motivates players who were not involved to strive for inclusion in future matches.
Leinster’s URC Fixture and Squad Depth
Prendergast will not be available for Leinster’s United Rugby Championship (URC) match against Cardiff this Friday, coinciding with a gap week in the Six Nations schedule. Leinster secured a bonus point win over Edinburgh in their last URC outing, despite missing several players due to international duty. Scott Penny scored a hat-trick in that match, turning around an eight-point halftime deficit.
Building for the Future
Cullen views the period with key players away on international duty as an opportunity to develop younger players and build squad depth. Robbie Henshaw and Jimmy O’Brien are returning to training, adding experience to the Leinster lineup. “It helps us build depth. It looks to the future and all that good stuff. We just necessitate to try and produce a better overall performance,” Cullen stated, acknowledging a gradual start in their recent win over Edinburgh.
Cardiff Challenge Awaits
Leinster faces a challenging away fixture against Cardiff, who are currently the strongest-performing Welsh team in the URC. Cullen acknowledged the challenging atmosphere at Cardiff Arms Park and the cohesion within the Cardiff squad. “It’ll be a proper test for our guys.”
