Mads Mikkelsen Joins Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in Scorsese’s ‘What Happens at Night’
Mads Mikkelsen is the latest addition to the cast of Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Apple Original Films feature, What Happens at Night, joining Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. The film, adapted from Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name, is currently in production.
Plot and Production Details
What Happens at Night follows a married American couple as they travel to a small, snowy European town with the intention of adopting a baby. The story unfolds as they encounter a cast of eccentric characters at the hotel where they are staying, leading them to question their relationship and their life’s purpose. Patricia Clarkson is also set to appear in the film.
Mikkelsen will portray Brother Emmanuel, described as a charismatic faith healer. Filming is taking place in the Czech Republic, with the crew utilizing a large area opposite a castle and employing artificial snow to create the desired atmosphere. Security measures are reportedly strict, with fencing around the location and numerous security personnel present.
Scorsese and Apple’s Continued Collaboration
This project marks the latest collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, following their critically acclaimed 2023 film, Killers of the Flower Moon. Jennifer Lawrence has also worked with Apple Original Films on projects including Causeway, Bread & Roses, and the upcoming murder mystery The Wives.

Mikkelsen’s recent work includes roles in Another Round, Casino Royale, Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and voicing Kiros in Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King. He is currently working on the dark comedy The Last Viking and the action thriller Sirius.
