Lerone Murphy Eyes Featherweight Title Shot After Knockout Win Over Aaron Pico

Lerone Murphy is steadily climbing the UFC featherweight ranks, and a recent highlight-reel knockout victory over Aaron Pico has solidified his position as a legitimate contender. Murphy is now poised for a potential title eliminator, with a crucial bout against Movsar Evloev on the horizon.

Murphy’s Journey to Contender Status

The 34-year-ancient Manchester, England native has quietly built an impressive 17-0-1 MMA record, including a 9-0-1 run in the UFC. His most recent performance, a first-round knockout of Pico at UFC 319 on August 17, 2025, was a statement win that has put the division on notice. The victory came via a perfectly timed spinning back elbow, leaving Pico unable to continue at the 3:21 mark of the first round. Video of the knockout is available online.

Upcoming Bout Against Movsar Evloev

Murphy (ranked #3) will face #1 ranked Movsar Evloev (19-0) in a main event bout at UFC Fight Night in London on March 21, 2026. The fight will be streamed on Paramount+. While a win doesn’t guarantee a title shot, a strong performance is expected to be enough to earn a challenge for the featherweight crown. Murphy is currently a slight underdog in the betting odds.

A Resilient Career

Murphy’s path to the UFC has been far from conventional. He didn’t begin training in MMA until the age of 22, following a life-altering incident. In 2013, at age 21, Murphy was shot three times in the neck and face while exiting a barber shop, leaving a bullet shard embedded in his tongue. This near-fatal experience prompted him to dedicate himself to martial arts.

Further setbacks included a cycling accident in 2022 that left him with a head injury and was initially believed to be career-ending. However, Murphy remarkably returned to the Octagon just 10 months later, demonstrating incredible resilience.

Looking Ahead

Murphy believes his story of overcoming adversity can inspire others, particularly those from challenging backgrounds. He aims to use his platform to provide opportunities and a positive mindset to young people. He acknowledges Evloev’s grappling prowess but is confident in his striking ability and believes that the longer the fight remains standing, the greater his chances of securing a knockout. Alexander Volkanovski has already acknowledged Murphy’s performance on X, stating he will see Murphy in December.

With a victory over Evloev, Lerone Murphy will be firmly in contention for a shot at the UFC featherweight title.
