Liam Livingstone Slams England Cricket, Claims ‘No One Cares About You’

Lancashire all-rounder Liam Livingstone has delivered a scathing critique of the current England cricket regime, alleging a lack of support and communication that led to his disillusionment with the national team. The 32-year-aged, who has earned 100 caps across all formats, has not played for England in over a year and appears resigned to remaining absent from future squads.

Disappointment with Key and McCullum

In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Livingstone was highly critical of his interactions with director of cricket Rob Key and described his experience at the 2025 Champions Trophy as “the worst experience I’ve had playing cricket.” He also stated he felt no desire to be part of the recent T20 World Cup squad.

Brief Communication and Lack of Support

Livingstone recounted a brief phone call with head coach Brendon McCullum last May following his omission from the team. “I don’t reckon it would have reached a minute. I asked why; they said they wanted to try someone else. That was off Baz. Brooky [Harry Brook] sent me a text,” he revealed. He further stated that Rob Key initially promised to discuss the matter in the summer but did not follow up until late September, after Livingstone had proactively contacted him. “Keysy said nothing, said I’ll speak to you in the summer. I actually rang him one day, and he said he was busy at a Test camp at Loughborough and then I didn’t hear off him until the end of September.”

Feeling Unvalued and a Cliquey Environment

Livingstone characterized the England setup as cliquey and uncaring towards players outside the core group. “That probably sums that group up as a collective. That was a bit of an eye-opening experience about the group and the regime,” he said. “If you’re in, you’re in, and if you’re not in, no one cares about you. That put my mind at ease that my cricket was going to be more enjoyable going forward.” He also expressed frustration at being told he “care[d] too much” when seeking support.

ECB Response and Future Prospects

Despite Livingstone’s strong words, Sky Sports News reports that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) does not believe Livingstone’s England career is over, and he will remain under consideration if his performance warrants it. The ECB’s Ashes review, examining “tour planning and preparation, individual performance and behaviours” after the 4-1 series defeat in Australia, is still ongoing.

Continued Franchise Success

Despite his international setbacks, Livingstone remains a highly sought-after player in franchise cricket, securing a £1m deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and a £350,000 bid from London Spirit in The Hundred auction. He maintains confidence in his abilities, stating, “I still believe I’m one of the best players in white-ball cricket in England. Just because I’m not playing for England, because of a couple of people’s opinions, it doesn’t mean that I’m not great enough to do it.” He added that he did not miss watching England’s recent T20 World Cup campaign, stating, “I didn’t miss it one bit. There wasn’t any part of me that was wishing I was playing in that team, to be honest.”
