LibreLocal 2026: Free Software Communities to Gather Globally This May

May is rapidly approaching and with it, LibreLocal month – a global initiative spearheaded by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) to foster community and celebrate free (libre) software. Building on the success of the inaugural LibreLocal events in 2025, the FSF is once again inviting free software enthusiasts to organize and participate in in-person meetups throughout May.

The Growing Momentum of LibreLocal

Last year, the FSF received an enthusiastic response to its call for local meetups, resulting in twenty-nine LibreLocal events across five continents. These gatherings took place in diverse locations including Brazil, Canada, China, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the United States, ranging from informal discussions to multi-day conferences. The FSF hopes to surpass this number in 2026.

What to Expect at a LibreLocal Meetup

LibreLocal meetups are designed to be inclusive, welcoming individuals of all experience levels, from seasoned free software developers to those simply curious about learning more. Events can cover a wide range of topics, including free software and free culture, digital rights, decentralized social networks, the right to repair, and free access to information. The format is flexible, allowing organizers to tailor events to the interests of their local community.

How to Get Involved

There are several ways to participate in LibreLocal 2026:

  • Organize a Meetup: The FSF provides resources to help with organization, including a meetup guide, a template for a safe space policy, and accounts of successful events from the previous year.
  • Find a Meetup: Check the LibrePlanet wiki for a list of events near you.
  • Connect with Organizers: If you’re interested in organizing a meetup but need assistance, add your name to the organizing page or email campaigns@fsf.org to connect with others in your area.

Funding Opportunities

The FSF is committed to financially assisting as many LibreLocal meetups as possible. Applications for funding are accepted through my.fsf.org, with a deadline of March 15, 2026. Please note that grant amounts are limited.

LibreLocal and the FSF’s 40th Anniversary

LibreLocal Month is part of the Free Software Foundation’s broader celebration of its 40th anniversary in 2025, alongside initiatives like a free software hackathon in November. The FSF views local initiatives as vital for grassroots campaigns and building a stronger free software community.

Quick Checklist for Organizers

The FSF encourages everyone to participate in LibreLocal 2026 and help make it a global success. Happy hacking!
