Lidl Closes €8.99 Mobile Contract Early After 100,000 Sign-Ups

Discount retailer Lidl has closed its new €8.99 for life mobile contract offer after reaching 100,000 sign-ups earlier than expected, The Journal reported. Any customers signing up from today onwards face a monthly charge of €12.99. That new rate matches the offer from other budget providers such as GoMo and Clear Mobile.

High Demand Drives Early Closure of Lifetime Deal

Lidl launched the promotion two and a half weeks ago, offering unlimited calls, texts, and data—including 5G—for its first 100,000 customers at the €8.99 rate. The retailer stated that the uptake demonstrates significant demand among Irish consumers for good value mobile provision. Strong brand awareness helped Lidl penetrate the mobile market quickly. Initially, the firm announced that the €8.99 promotion would remain available until year’s end or until 100,000 subscribers joined.

Competitors React to Market Shakeup

The pricing strategy has shaken up the Irish budget mobile provider market. Budget provider 48 Mobile recently introduced 5G to users on inexpensive older tariffs, seemingly to prevent a mass migration of customers over to Lidl. Until now, customers on 48 Mobile’s legacy €7.99 plan used 4G internet. New subscribers to 48 Mobile contracts featuring 5G have lately faced a €9.99 charge spanning six months followed by €12.99 monthly, alongside a €9.99 activation fee.

Users of older 4G plans have conversed on 48 Mobile’s support site and digital discussion boards regarding a potential switch to Lidl, pointing out that paying just €1 more each month would upgrade them to 5G. GoMo also rolled out 5G to its customers on cheaper legacy plans this month. Eir hosts the network infrastructure for both GoMo and Lidl, whereas Three provides the network for 48 Mobile.

In a statement to The Journal, 48 Mobile said it was delighted to roll out 5G to all its customers. The company added that this would mean faster speeds and better value at no extra cost to its users, with rollout completed by the end of this month.
