Liepāja Theatre’s new musical production, “Freimanis,” dedicated to the life and legacy of Latvian musician Mārtiņš Freimanis (1977-2011), has captivated audiences. The production, directed by Mārtiņš Kalita, premiered on February 28th and features actor Valts Skuja in the titular role.

A Life in Song and Paradox

The play explores the complex and often contradictory personality of Freimanis, a prolific songwriter and the leader of the band “Tumsa.” Described as living life “fast and without brakes,” Freimanis left behind a significant musical legacy and a wealth of stories. The production delves into his unique character, marked by a fondness for simple pleasures like onions and a penchant for the unconventional, such as keeping a preserved chinchilla in his freezer.

Valts Skuja Steps into Freimanis’ Shoes

Actor Valts Skuja, a recent graduate of the Liepāja Theatre’s acting course, has garnered attention for his striking resemblance to Freimanis. Prior to landing the role, Skuja performed one of Freimanis’ songs during a Christmas concert, a performance that led director Maija Kalniņa to note the physical similarity. Skuja, who has a musical background with training in clarinet, prepared for the role by interviewing those who knew Freimanis and immersing himself in the musician’s work.
