Eli lilly to Invest $6 Billion in Huntsville, Creating 450 Jobs

HUNTSVILLE – Governor Kay Ivey announced on Tuesday that Eli Lilly and Company will invest over $6 billion in a new advanced manufacturing operation in Huntsville, Alabama.This facility will focus on producing next-generation medicines.

The pharmaceutical giant plans to create 450 jobs in the region, including positions for engineers, scientists, operations personnel, and lab technicians.

The Huntsville site will be a synthetic medicine active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) facility, marking the third of four new U.S. sites Lilly intends to establish. It will specialize in the production of small molecule synthetic and peptide medicines.

Notably, the facility will manufacture orforglipron, Lilly’s first oral, small molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist, currently under review by global regulatory agencies for obesity treatment. The company anticipates submitting the drug for approval by the end of this year.

“Huntsville and our entire state have a proven legacy of innovation, and there is no better home for Lilly than right here in Alabama. Our roots in the biosciences industry run deep, and Alabama’s contributions to this burgeoning sector continue,” saeid Governor Ivey. “We are proud to welcome Lilly’s new U.S. manufacturing facility, which represents the largest initial investment in our state’s history.

“No doubt, Alabamians will help Lilly achieve breakthroughs and improve the health and wellbeing of people across the country and around the globe,” continued Governor Ivey.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with completion expected in 2032. The construction phase itself is projected to generate approximately 3,000 jobs.

“Huntsville’s strong record in science and innovation, combined with its advanced manufacturing expertise and skilled workforce, makes Alabama an ideal location for Lilly to expand its domestic manufacturing capacity for next-generation medicines,” said Lilly chair and CEO David A. Ricks.
