Isabel Coixet and David Trueba Lead Spanish Film Showcase at Valladolid Festival
The 69th Valladolid International Film Festival is set to highlight the work of prominent Spanish filmmakers Isabel Coixet and David Trueba, alongside a celebration of the intersection between literature and cinema. The festival will feature films by these acclaimed directors, as well as adaptations of novels and explorations of narrative forms.
Coixet and Trueba’s Latest Works
Isabel Coixet, a prolific Spanish film director with twelve feature-length films to her credit, will be represented at the festival. Her work often explores themes of emotions, feelings, and existential conflict, setting her apart within Spanish national cinema. Coixet was born in Barcelona in 1960 and has consistently pushed boundaries in her filmmaking.
David Trueba, a Goya best picture winner, will also be featured. His latest film, “Always Winter,” adapts his 2015 novella “Blitz,” and delves into the complexities of romantic breakups. Variety reports that Trueba’s work is known for its heartfelt and humane approach to storytelling.
Literature and Film Intertwined
This year’s festival emphasizes the strong relationship between literature and cinema, a connection described as “ink of light” by Jean Cocteau. Several films are adaptations of novels, including works by Isabel Coixet and Celia Rico. The festival will also showcase a film-conversation with writer and journalist Manuel Vicent by David Trueba and Luis Aleja, and an animated adaptation of the graphic novel “The Movie of Life.”
Celebrating Almudena Grandes
The festival will also pay tribute to the late writer Almudena Grandes with a film directed by Azucena Rodríguez, created in collaboration with Grandes’ partner, poet Luis García Montero.
Other Spanish Films at Valladolid
Beyond Coixet and Trueba, the festival will also feature films by Rafael Cobos and Diego San José, as well as world premieres from Judith Colell and Fernando Franco, both Sebastián Special Jury Prize winners.
