Liza Minnelli Reflects on Life, Loss, and Love in New Memoir

Liza Minnelli, who will turn 80 on March 12, 2026, is offering a candid look into her life in her new memoir, “Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!” The book, based on over a decade of interviews with Michael Feinstein, delves into her tumultuous childhood, her relationship with her mother Judy Garland, and her personal struggles with addiction and relationships.

A Childhood Shaped by Fame

Minnelli’s upbringing was far from typical, being the daughter of two Hollywood icons, Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli. She describes a childhood where she felt she wasn’t allowed to simply be a child, as her life was intertwined with the demands of her parents’ careers. In the memoir, Minnelli recalls acting as a caregiver for her mother at a young age, stating, “At 13 I was my mother’s nurse, doctor, pharmacist and psychiatrist.”

The memoir likewise addresses Minnelli’s personal life, including her marriage to Peter Allen. Michael Feinstein, a longtime friend and collaborator, played a key role in the creation of the memoir, conducting over ten years of interviews with Minnelli. Their friendship is well-documented, with Feinstein also appearing in the recent documentary about her life.
