Aspyr has released The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition, bringing Snowblind Studios’ 2011 action RPG to modern platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, according to announcements from Games Press, IGN, and Push Square. Priced at $19.99 with a launch discount, the remastered title introduces modern quality-of-life updates, online co-op, and controller support across Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.
Platforms, Pricing, and Launch Details
According to reports from RPGSite and Gematsu, the new Legacy Edition is available digitally across multiple storefronts for $19.99, £18.99, or €23.99. Regional release schedules vary slightly, with European versions for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 launching on August 18, while other versions are already live with a 10% launch discount running through August 24.
The release marks the return of a cooperative title that initially debuted over a decade ago. According to IGN, the sudden shadow drop signals that additional Lord of the Rings remasters are currently in the works following this re-release, as confirmed by Aspyr.
Modern Enhancements and Gameplay Additions
The remastered package updates the original 2011 game with several performance and interface upgrades. According to official release details, players can experience 60 FPS gameplay on supported platforms alongside new autosave functionality and expanded save slots. Quality-of-life improvements include refined enemy-target locking, trigger-based secret detection that lets players spot hidden caches regardless of their active character, and updated UI elements displaying Health, Mana, and EXP bars for all party members.
Motion controls have also been integrated. According to source notes, gyro control support is included on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Character Hot-Swapping and Co-Op Features
Players can build a Fellowship choosing from three distinct classes: Eradan the Dúnadan Ranger, Andriel the Elven Loremaster, and Farin the Dwarven Champion. According to RPGSite, this edition introduces a character hot-swapping feature that allows users to switch characters on-the-fly while fully assigning equipment, skills, and abilities to computer-controlled allies for the first time.
Multiplayer options support up to three players online or two players in local split-screen co-op. Combat mechanics also feature the ability to call upon Beleram, a Great Eagle, to strike from the sky against enemies.
Expanding Tolkien’s Legendarium in the North
Set outside the direct path of Frodo and Samwise, the narrative follows a secondary Fellowship defending the North against Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean and servant of Sauron. According to Gematsu, the campaign takes players through lore-rich locations such as Rivendell, Lórien, Mirkwood, and the ruins of Fornost to battle Orcs, Wargs, Trolls, and spectral Barrow-wights while encountering familiar figures like Aragorn, Gandalf, and Elrond.
