Louise Ekman Soars to New Heights, Securing Spot at World Indoor Championships

Banská Bystrica, Slovakia – Louise Ekman, 28, delivered a stunning performance at a high jump gala in Banská Bystrica on Tuesday, clearing 1.96 meters and setting a new personal best. The achievement not only elevates her to a shared third-place ranking among Swedish women indoor high jumpers of all time but also virtually guarantees her participation in the upcoming World Indoor Championships.

A Breakthrough Performance

Ekman’s successful jump of 1.96 meters represents a remarkable improvement of nine centimeters in her personal best this year and five centimeters on the night. She navigated the earlier heights – 1.75, 1.80, 1.85, and 1.90 – flawlessly before successfully clearing 1.92 meters on her third attempt. She then cleared 1.94 meters on her second attempt before finally conquering 1.96 meters on her second try, eliciting cheers from the crowd.

Expert Praise and Championship Prospects

National team captain Kajsa Bergqvist lauded Ekman’s performance, stating, “From Swedish elite to world elite in two months. I am so incredibly happy for Louise. She is ready for the indoor WC, this will be enough.” Bergqvist, who herself coached with Bengt Jönsson for ten years, highlighted the significance of this breakthrough after years of hard work.

Ekman expressed her own surprise and delight, saying, “Personal record here tonight by five centimeters… I didn’t think that was possible at all. I bet 1.92, but 1.96 is much better so I’m very happy and actually completely shocked.” She added, “I still don’t really understand what happened. It feels strange, but I hope it sinks in during the evening.”

A New Level of Training and Support

Ekman credits her recent success to a consistent training regimen with coach Bengt Jönsson over the past three years, combined with a supportive work environment that allows for optimal recovery. “Me and Bengt have gradually increased the amount of training… Then I also have a kind partner who offered me a job at his company. So now I can lay out the days as I want, and it has given a completely different opportunity for recovery. Everything just works incredibly well, training, recovery… I feel very well, everything in life is working.”

Competition Results

Angelina Topic of Serbia won the competition with a jump of 2.00 meters. Ekman finished third.
