Italian Doctor to Lead Lourdes Medical Bureau, Marking Historic First

Starting in mid-April 2026, Dr. Giada Monami will officially assume the role of medical director of the Medical Bureau of the Sanctuary of Lourdes. This bureau is responsible for the scientific evaluation of reported healings at the renowned French Marian shrine.

A Historic Appointment

Dr. Monami will succeed Dr. Alessandro de Franciscis, who has directed the Bureau for more than sixteen years. Her appointment marks a historic moment as she is the first woman to head the office.

Dr. Monami’s Background

Originally from Pordenone, Dr. Monami is an internist and pharmacist with a strong scientific background and extensive hospital experience. She also has a deep personal connection to Lourdes, having volunteered as a physician during pilgrimages organized by Unitalsi, the association that brings the sick to the Marian sanctuary.

The Role of the Medical Bureau

Founded in 1883, the Medical Bureau is the first step in examining reported “inexplicable” healings recognized by the sanctuary. Its task is to assess documented cases with clinical and methodological rigor to determine whether scientific explanations exist or if further investigation is warranted.

Transition of Leadership

Dr. Alessandro de Franciscis, the outgoing director, was officially thanked during a celebration on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. During his fifteen-year tenure, he verified five miracles, including the 72nd officially recognized miracle at Lourdes in 2025, involving Antonietta Raco from Basilicata. He expressed gratitude for his time serving at Lourdes.
