Hanover State Opera Receives €25 Million in Funding to Secure Future
Hanover’s State Opera, along with six other municipal theaters in Lower Saxony, will benefit from a €25 million funding boost over five years. The financial support aims to offset rising tariff costs and ensure the continued operation of these vital cultural institutions.
Political and Artistic Leaders Convene to Discuss Theater Funding
The announcement came during a parliamentary evening held at the State Opera, bringing together politicians and representatives from the theater community for a discussion on art and its financial sustainability. Attendees included theater directors, administrative staff, and artists.
Addressing Tariff Increases and Long-Term Stability
Petra Broistedt, negotiator for the municipal theaters, highlighted the necessitate for consistent state support. She emphasized that, for the past ten years, the state has not contributed to collective wage increases, despite these being mandated by collective bargaining agreements. The funds are intended to cover employee wages and tariff increases, not discretionary spending.
Theaters Included in the Funding Initiative
The funding will support the three state theaters – Hanover, Braunschweig, and Oldenburg – as well as the municipal theaters in Lüneburg, Göttingen, Osnabrück, Celle, Hildesheim, and Wilhelmshaven. The Göttingen Symphony Orchestra is also included in this initiative. Municipal theaters rely heavily on funding from their respective cities and districts, unlike their state-funded counterparts.
Local Representation and Future Prospects
Representatives from Lüneburg, including District Administrator Jens Böther and Mayor Claudia Kalisch, attended the parliamentary evening, along with state parliament politicians from various parties. Discussions indicated potential for increased funding in the upcoming state budget, offering the possibility of long-term planning security for the theaters.
A Showcase of Talent
The event also featured performances by scholarship holders from the Academy of Young Music Theater, Lotta Wroblewski and Frithjof Gerken, accompanied by Daniel Stickan and Philip Richert. Director Friedrich von Mansberg underscored the importance of theaters as spaces for reflection, exchange, and democratic participation.
Impact on Lüneburg’s Theater
Director Friedrich von Mansberg anticipates an additional €2 million in funding for Lüneburg in 2027, followed by a further €1.5 million annually. This financial support is expected to be crucial for the theater, which has faced financial challenges in recent years.
