Healthier Sips: Dunkin’, Gatorade, and Beyond Launch Lower-Sugar Beverages
A wave of new beverage options focused on lower sugar content and enhanced functionality is arriving this spring, as major brands respond to growing consumer demand for healthier choices. Gatorade, Dunkin’, and Beyond are leading the charge with innovations designed for hydration, energy, and protein intake throughout the day.
Gatorade Lowers Sugar Content
Gatorade has announced a new sports drink lineup, Gatorade Lower Sugar, featuring 75% less sugar than its traditional Thirst Quencher electrolyte drinks. The new line contains no artificial flavors, sweeteners, or colors. Dr. Matt Pahnke, senior principal scientist at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, stated that the product “delivers science-backed hydration aligned with what today’s active consumers are asking for.” Anuj Bhasin, Gatorade’s SVP of marketing, added that the line is “designed to hydrate everyday movers who want science-backed hydration to fuel their day.”
Dunkin’ Introduces Dunkin’ Zero
Dunkin’ is entering the energy drink market with Dunkin’ Zero, a zero-sugar energy drink available in six fruit-forward flavors: Blackberry Tangerine, Tropical Mango, Juicy Peach, Glamberry (Blackberry Tangerine + Juicy Peach), Sunzest (Tropical Mango + Juicy Peach), and Blushpop (Blackberry Tangerine + Tropical Mango).
A medium-sized Dunkin’ Zero contains just 20 calories and zero grams of sugar. Jill Nelson, chief marketing officer at Dunkin’, explained that Dunkin’ Zero “expands how we fuel” consumers’ days, offering “zero-sugar energy that delivers bold flavor without compromise.”
Dunkin’ has likewise highlighted banana as the “flavor of the season,” introducing banana-flavored beverages like the Banana Puddin’ Cloud Latte and Banana Daydream Refresher.
Beyond Immerse Expands Hydration Portfolio
Beyond Immerse, a product of plant-based meat alternative company Beyond, has expanded its hydration line with new flavors of sparkling protein drinks. These drinks combine up to 20 grams of plant protein, 7 grams of fiber, antioxidants, and electrolytes. New flavors include Cherry Berry, Strawberry Lemonade, Piña Colada, and Cucumber Grapefruit, available in variety packs.
Ethan Brown, founder and CEO of Beyond, stated that Beyond Immerse represents the brand’s expansion beyond protein alternatives, aiming to “redefine the protein drink” with a beverage that harnesses “the remarkable power of plants.” The drinks are available with either 10 grams of protein (60 calories) or 20 grams of protein (100 calories).
Nationwide Push for Reduced Sugar Intake
These launches occur alongside a broader national effort led by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. To reduce Americans’ consumption of added sugars and artificial food dyes.
