Shane Lowry Finds Perspective After Cogizant Classic Heartbreak
Palm Beach Gardens, FL – Shane Lowry is drawing on support from family and fellow athletes as he processes a difficult finish at the Cogizant Classic, where he relinquished a three-shot lead in the final round. Despite the disappointment, Lowry is focused on the positives and looking ahead to this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.
A Tough Finish at the Cogizant Classic
Lowry’s hopes for a first individual victory since the 2022 BMW Championship at Wentworth were dashed last Sunday as Nico Echavarria secured the win. A double-bogey at the 16th hole and further trouble at the 17th proved costly, despite Lowry’s strong performance for much of the tournament. He acknowledged the sting of the loss but emphasized the quality of his play throughout the week.
“I think I played, for a lot of the tournament last week, some of the best golf of my whole career,” Lowry told Sirius XM Sports. “And I felt so in control out there. And then it was, you understand, one bad swing took it all away from me.”
Support System Provides Comfort
Following the tournament, Lowry received an outpouring of support, including a particularly meaningful phone call from an Irish sportsperson he admires. He also found solace in a simple conversation with his nine-year-classic daughter, Iris.
“On Sunday night, I didn’t sleep at all, really,” Lowry admitted. “You go through all the scenarios in your head and the regrets you have, but you know, I’m very fortunate. I’ve got a great support network around me.”
A Daughter’s Perspective
Lowry recounted a heartwarming exchange with his daughter Iris on her ninth birthday. While at Starbucks, a friend remarked on the disappointment surrounding Lowry’s second-place finish. Iris responded with a refreshingly simple perspective.
“And we were sitting there, and a friend of mine came over to the car, and honestly, speaking to people over the last few days, it’s like someone had passed away,” Lowry explained. “When they see me, they’re like, afraid to talk to me, and I’m like, ‘No, I’m fine’, or whatever.”
“And my daughter just turned around, and she goes, ‘Dad, why is everyone acting so sad that you finished second? Like, second’s, decent.’ So, yeah, a little bit of perspective there. She’s like, ‘It’s not like you finished last.’“
Looking Ahead to Bay Hill
Despite the recent setback, Lowry remains optimistic, and determined. He is focused on continuing to put himself in contention and learning from his experiences. He tees off at 3:40 pm Irish time at Bay Hill today.
“Hopefully, I can keep putting myself there,” Lowry said. “I think that’s all I can do, if I keep putting myself there and try to focus on the positives from last week.”
