Global Greens CSA Announces 2026 Season, Supporting Refugee Farmers and Local Food Access
Sign-ups are now open for the 2026 season of the Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) Global Greens Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, beginning May 26 and running through September 22. The program provides sustainably grown produce cultivated by refugee farmers, connecting them with the land and fostering entrepreneurial opportunities.
Supporting Refugee Farmers Through Sustainable Agriculture
Global Greens reconnects former refugee farmers with agricultural livelihoods in the United States. The program offers access to land, business development assistance and technical support, enabling farmers to start and grow their own small farming businesses. LSI partners with Valley Community Center in West Des Moines, operating an 8.5-acre incubator farm. Since its inception, Global Greens farmers have collectively generated over $750,000 in gross sales.
CSA Details and Subscription Options
Subscribers can choose from 18 weekly or nine biweekly shares, starting at $37.50 per week. Each share includes six to ten varieties of locally and culturally diverse crops, harvested at peak freshness. Pick-up locations are conveniently situated throughout the Des Moines metro area, with home delivery available as an option.
Expanding Food Access with Double Up Food Bucks
To enhance accessibility, Global Greens participates in Iowa’s Double Up Food Bucks program. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) participants are eligible for a 50% discount, increasing access to healthy, locally-sourced food options.
Commitment to Sustainable Practices
Global Greens prioritizes sustainable farming methods, growing produce without synthetic chemicals and promoting soil and ecosystem health. The program also supports LSI’s Pantry program, which provides food assistance to food-insecure refugee households.
Farmers’ Market and Additional Access Points
In addition to the CSA, Global Greens produce is available at the LSI Global Greens Farmers’ Market, located at 3200 University Ave, Des Moines, IA 50311, operating Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm from June to October. The market accepts credit cards, WIC/FMNP vouchers, SFMNP, and SNAP benefits.
Urban Gardens and Community Involvement
LSI also facilitates urban garden plots for former refugee families in partnership with the City of Des Moines, volunteers, and private landowners. Individuals interested in providing space for a garden are encouraged to contact globalgreens@lsiowa.org for more information.
