Lufthansa Revamps A380 Business Class with Novel Seats and Enhanced Comfort

Lufthansa is undertaking a significant cabin upgrade program, beginning with its Airbus A380 fleet. The airline will retrofit all eight of its A380s with new Business Class seats, aiming to provide passengers with increased comfort, privacy, and modern amenities. The project, part of a broader fleet renewal effort, will also extend to the Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A350-900 aircraft.

Retrofit Details and Timeline

The A380 retrofit program commenced in early February, starting with the aircraft registered as “Mike-Charly.” The work is being carried out at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden. Lufthansa anticipates that passengers will be able to experience the new Business Class cabin onboard the A380 as early as April.

New Business Class Seat Features

The new Business Class seats, manufactured by Thompson, are designed to offer a premium travel experience. Key features include:

  • Direct Aisle Access: Each seat provides direct access to the aisle, enhancing convenience and freedom of movement.
  • Seat Width: A generous seat width of 58 cm (approximately 23 inches).
  • Bed Length: A bed length of at least two meters (approximately 79 inches).
  • Connectivity: Integrated Bluetooth connectivity for personal devices.
  • Privacy: Flexible partitions to offer enhanced privacy.

Broader Fleet Upgrade Program

Beyond the A380, Lufthansa’s “Retrofit” conversion program encompasses upgrades across multiple aircraft types. The Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A350-900 will also receive new seats in all classes, demonstrating Lufthansa’s commitment to modernizing its long-haul fleet.

Lufthansa’s A380 Fleet in Europe

Lufthansa currently operates the only substantial A380 fleet within the European Union. Heiko Reitz, Hub Manager Munich, Lufthansa Airlines, emphasized the airline’s dedication to providing a top-tier flight experience on its popular A380 aircraft.

Overall Capacity

The A380 will ultimately feature 68 new Business Class seats following the completion of the retrofit program.
