Lufthansa Launches Munich to Phoenix Nonstop Flights
Lufthansa is expanding its U.S. network for summer 2027 by launching nonstop flights between Munich Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The German carrier announced the new Arizona route just one day after revealing a separate connection between Frankfurt Airport and Columbus International Airport.
Flights on the Munich-to-Phoenix route will begin on August 3, 2027. The service will operate three times per week, with departures scheduled for Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Unlike the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner assigned to the Frankfurt-to-Columbus route, Lufthansa will operate the Phoenix service using an Airbus A350-900. According to One Mile at a Time, the transatlantic route covers approximately 5,823 miles in each direction.
Expanding Transatlantic Connections in the American Southwest
Travelers flying on the new route benefit from a nonstop route connecting Lufthansa’s base in Bavaria with the largest city in Arizona, bypassing any layovers. Lufthansa describes the state capital as one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States, targeting both leisure travelers and business passengers.
The route establishes the initial routine direct flight linking Phoenix and a Lufthansa Group hub in the carrier group’s current network. Phoenix has previously seen transatlantic service from German carriers, such as Condor, which operated flights before discontinuing the route in 2025.
While Phoenix serves as an important hub for American Airlines with extensive domestic connections, its direct European links have historically remained more limited than major coastal gateways. British Airways and American Airlines currently serve London Heathrow Airport, and Air France introduced a Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport connection in 2024, One Mile at a Time noted.
Broader Network Growth Across the Lufthansa Group
The Phoenix announcement is part of the Lufthansa Group’s most extensive network growth program since 2020. The summer 2027 schedule outlines ten new intercontinental connections, alongside additional frequencies on existing services.
Other developments in the broader expansion include Discover Airlines’ new Frankfurt-to-Edmonton International Airport service and ITA Airways’ planned Rome Fiumicino Airport-to-Caracas Airport connection. The commercial success of the Munich-to-Phoenix route will depend on connecting traffic through Munich alongside point-to-point travelers.
