The influenza epidemic, while still present in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region between January 26th and February 1st, showed encouraging signs of decline for the first time in nine weeks. Key indicators across the board have begun to trend downwards, suggesting a potential easing of the seasonal surge.

Decreasing Indicators Across All Age Groups

Data from private medical practices indicates a slight decrease in flu-related activity among SOS Médecins consultations. While cases remain concentrated in children under 15 – the most affected demographic this season – the proportion of cases within this age group decreased from 42.5% to 40.9% between weeks 4 and 5. More significantly, hospital emergency room visits have decreased by 11% across all age groups, including a reduction in pediatric cases.

Hospitalizations resulting from emergency room visits are also decreasing across all age groups, even though the majority of these hospitalizations (66%) continue to involve patients aged 65 and over.

Despite the overall positive trend, influenza continues to pose a serious risk to the elderly population. Excess mortality rates, which saw a notable increase at the end of the year, persist. During week 5, 98% of electronically reported influenza-related deaths involved individuals aged 65 or older, highlighting the vulnerability of this demographic.
