Apple is developing a next-generation MacBook Neo powered by an A19 Pro chip and featuring an upgraded 12GB of RAM, according to a report by Bloomberg. The upcoming budget-focused laptop, slated for release in 2027 following the March debut of the original model, addresses performance and memory limitations of the current hardware while maintaining Apple’s strategy of periodic color updates.
A19 Pro Chip Integration and Performance Metrics
The current MacBook Neo operates on the A18 Pro chip, identical to the processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro. According to Bloomberg’s reporting, the upcoming second-generation model will transition to the A19 Pro chip, which is also utilized in flagship devices like the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air.
Benchmark tests show the A19 Pro delivers a 10% to 15% increase in single-core and multi-core CPU performance compared to its predecessor. Graphics performance sees a larger gain, featuring up to a 40% boost driven by Neural Accelerators built into every GPU core.
Reporter Tim Culpan notes that Apple plans to utilize a binned version of the A19 Pro chip for the MacBook Neo. While the flagship iPhone 17 Pro configuration features a six-core GPU, the MacBook Neo variant will likely house a five-core GPU.
Memory Upgrade and On-Device AI Support
The original MacBook Neo ships with 8GB of RAM, serving as a primary hardware compromise compared to the rest of Apple’s Mac lineup, which starts at 16GB. The second-generation model bridges this gap partially by moving to 12GB of RAM, enabled by the A19 Pro platform.
The hardware pairing of the A19 Pro chip and 12GB of RAM unlocks support for Apple’s advanced on-device artificial intelligence model initially announced at WWDC. The current A18 Pro and 8GB configuration prevents the first-generation laptop from supporting these specific capabilities, which include enhanced dictation accuracy and custom Siri voice options.

Apple introduced the initial MacBook Neo in March with an exterior color palette including citrus, blush, indigo, and silver. Bloomberg reports that Apple intends to refresh the laptop line periodically with new color options, though specific hues for the 2027 release remain unannounced.
