The 2026 ceremony started with Madonna’s opening number, which brought dancers and guest appearances from actor Debi Mazar, Sombr, and Julia Garner onto the stage.
Host Snoop Dogg introduced the next segment of the night, praising the opener. “Now that is an icon,” Snoop Dogg said during the live broadcast, before adding a joke about her history with the network. Teyana Taylor then presented the first competitive award of the night, best pop, to LISA for “Dream” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi.
Taylor Swift Set to Make History With Artist Director Honors
Taylor Swift enters the evening tied with Beyoncé as the most-awarded musician in VMA history, with 30 wins each. During the ceremony, Swift is slated to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors, a new category established to recognize creators whose behind-the-camera work expands visual storytelling in music videos. The award will bring her career total to 31 wins.
Swift will also debut the self-directed music video for her new song, “Patient Zero,” starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. The release marks Swift’s first single since her July marriage to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden.

Madonna leads all contenders at the 2026 VMAs with 11 nominations across categories including video, artist, and song of the year, alongside nods for best collaboration, dance, direction, art direction, cinematography, editing, choreography, and visual effects.
