Venice Film Festival jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal stated on Wednesday that cinema functions as an inherently political medium while arguing that female filmmakers continue to confront systemic obstacles regarding film finance and project valuation, according to Reuters reporting from the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.
Financing Hurdles and the Definition of High Art
Speaking on the opening day of the festival on September 2, 2026, Gyllenhaal questioned how the industry determines which cinematic narratives deserve support and validation. According to Reuters, she pointed directly to the difficulties women encounter when trying to secure financial backing for stories rooted in female experiences.
“Could it be possible that the things that women, having had a different experience of being alive in the world want to make movies about are not always deemed high art?” Gyllenhaal asked reporters in Venice, as reported by Reuters. “Who decides what’s good? There’s a systemic problem.”
Official programming figures for the 2026 festival highlight the stark gender disparity in the main competition slate. According to Reuters, only two films out of the 21 features selected for the main program are directed or co-directed by women.
Festival Leadership Response and Submission Statistics
Venice Film Festival President Alberto Barbera addressed criticism surrounding the lack of female representation in the lineup. According to Reuters, Barbera defended the selection by noting that only 24% of submissions for this year’s event came from female directors, dropping from 30% the previous year. Barbera also maintained that his primary responsibility remains ensuring the overall artistic quality of the festival program.
The festival runs from September 2 through September 12, 2026, at the Lido in Venice, Italy. Gyllenhaal arrived at the Palazzo del Casino to assume her duties as head of the main competition jury, returning to the festival five years after premiering her directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, in 2021.
Directing Background and the Lack of Early Role Models
Reflecting on her transition from acting to directing, Gyllenhaal told Reuters that she feels more natural behind the camera but recalled a distinct lack of visible precedent during her formative years in the industry.
“I was probably always a director,” Gyllenhaal said, according to Reuters. “But I didn’t see anyone around me that was a woman doing it.”
Cinema’s Inherent Political Nature
Gyllenhaal also addressed broader artistic debates regarding the intersection of film and global politics. According to Reuters, her comments followed controversy at the Berlin Film Festival earlier in the year when jury president Wim Wenders faced criticism for asserting that filmmakers must stay out of politics.
Rejecting the separation of art from political reality, Gyllenhaal argued that films depicting authentic human lives are unavoidably political.
“Personally, I don’t believe that there is any subject or any filmmaker that shouldn’t be heard,” Gyllenhaal stated, according to Reuters, adding that even stories concerning corrupt or perverse figures can foster audience empathy and shed light on darker facets of human nature during times of global turmoil.
