Mainz 05 has completed the permanent signing of Austria international defender Stefan Posch from Italian club Como following a successful loan spell, according to a Wednesday announcement by the Bundesliga club. The 29-year-old center back originally moved to Mainz on loan in January, quickly securing a regular starting role during the second half of the previous campaign. Neither the transfer fee nor the length of his new contract was disclosed by the club.
Integration and Bundesliga Experience
According to Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert, Posch arrived during the winter transfer window specifically to bolster his chances of selection for the Austria national team ahead of the FIFA World Cup. “Stefan integrated extremely quickly and immediately made us better,” Bungert stated, highlighting the defender’s versatility and extensive background in the Bundesliga and international competition.
Posch made more than 150 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim and Mainz following his initial move to Germany in 2015. His career also includes a two-season stint with Bologna prior to joining Como. Reflecting on his permanent transfer, Posch noted that the club suited him immediately despite a challenging sporting situation upon his arrival in January. “It just clicked immediately, and I am really looking forward to the new season,” he said.
European Campaign and Upcoming Fixtures
During his initial loan spell, Posch started all 16 of Mainz’s Bundesliga matches and scored two goals in the UEFA Conference League, helping the club secure qualification for European football this season. At the international level, he earned 56 caps for Austria and started all four of the team’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as reported by Xinhua.
Mainz is scheduled to open its competitive campaign later this month in the first round of the German Cup. Following that cup fixture, the club will begin its Bundesliga season at home against newly promoted Paderborn.
